The Science

The sunshine vitamin that most of Britain never actually gets.

Vitamin D is technically a misnomer. It is not a vitamin in the conventional sense because the human body can synthesise it endogenously under the right conditions. It is a prohormone, a precursor to an active steroid hormone called calcitriol, which regulates gene expression in virtually every tissue type in the body. The vitamin classification persists for historical reasons, but the biology is considerably more significant than the term suggests.

The synthesis pathway begins in the skin. When ultraviolet B radiation from sunlight strikes cholesterol in skin cells, it converts it to cholecalciferol, the same form used in this formula. This is then transported to the liver where it is converted to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the storage form measured in blood tests. Finally, the kidneys convert it to calcitriol, the active hormonal form. Every step in this pathway requires adequate substrate and cofactors, including magnesium, which is also present in The Daily Foundation.

The United Kingdom sits between 50 and 59 degrees north latitude. From October to March, the angle of the sun is too low for UVB radiation to reach the earth's surface in sufficient intensity to trigger meaningful skin synthesis. During this period, endogenous vitamin D production is essentially zero for the entire population regardless of time spent outdoors. Even in summer, cloud cover, sunscreen use, clothing and the practical reality of indoor work mean that the majority of people do not achieve the sun exposure required for adequate synthesis.

This is not a universal problem. But it is close to one.

Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most significant nutritional deficiencies in the developed world. In the UK, the most recent National Diet and Nutrition Survey found that approximately 20% of adults are severely deficient and a further 35 to 40% have insufficient status. During winter months the numbers are considerably higher. Some estimates based on seasonal variation and latitude modelling suggest that over 90% of the UK population has insufficient vitamin D status at some point between October and March.

The consequences of population-level deficiency extend beyond the individual. Low vitamin D status is independently associated with increased all-cause mortality, higher rates of cardiovascular disease, increased autoimmune disease incidence, impaired cognitive function and reduced muscle performance. These are not marginal associations. They are robust epidemiological findings replicated across multiple large cohort studies and supported by mechanistic evidence from randomised controlled trials.

Athletes and regularly active people are not protected by their training. Exercise does not synthesise vitamin D. High training volumes combined with indoor training environments and the UK climate create conditions where even health-conscious, active individuals are frequently deficient without being aware of it.

You cannot train your way to adequate vitamin D status in Britain. Geography makes supplementation the only reliable solution for most of the year.

The food sources are real. The quantities are not.

Vitamin D is present in a small number of foods. Oily fish including salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines contain 400 to 800 IU per 100g serving. Egg yolks contain approximately 40 IU each. Fortified foods including some dairy products and cereals add modest amounts. The picture looks passable on paper. The quantities required to achieve adequate serum levels through diet alone are not.

To consume 2,000 IU of vitamin D from food daily you would need to eat approximately 250 to 500g of oily fish every single day. This is neither practical nor desirable given the mercury content of regularly consumed oily fish at high volumes. The realistic dietary contribution to vitamin D status in the UK is 100 to 300 IU per day for most people, which is less than 10 to 15% of what is required to maintain adequate serum levels through winter.

The UK government recognised this and in 2016 issued guidance recommending that all adults consider supplementing 400 IU of vitamin D daily throughout autumn and winter. Independent evidence, including a 2017 BMJ meta-analysis of 25 randomised controlled trials, strongly supports higher doses for people starting from a deficient baseline. The 2,000 IU dose in this formula reflects that evidence.

Diet contributes less than 15% of what most people need. The gap between dietary vitamin D and adequate status is not a gap. It is a chasm.

D3 from lichen. Not from sheep.

Most vitamin D3 supplements on the market are derived from lanolin, a lipid extracted from sheep's wool. This is the standard and cheapest manufacturing route. It is also not vegan. The lichen-derived vitamin D3 in this formula is produced from a species of algae that naturally synthesises cholecalciferol when exposed to ultraviolet light, the same molecule your skin would produce under sunlight.

The choice to use lichen-derived D3 was not a marketing decision. It was a formulation principle. No Hype Nutrition is fully vegan and will not compromise that commitment for cost reasons. The lichen-derived form is chemically identical to lanolin-derived D3 and produces equivalent increases in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D at matched doses. The bioavailability, the efficacy and the clinical outcomes are the same. The source is not.

Who should take it? In the UK, almost everyone.

Anyone living in the UK above 50 degrees latitude. The geographical reality of British winter makes endogenous vitamin D synthesis impossible for most of the year. Supplementation is not optional for anyone who wants to maintain adequate status year-round.

Athletes and people in regular training. Low vitamin D status independently impairs muscle function, slows recovery and increases injury risk. The evidence for vitamin D in athletic performance is robust and consistent across multiple sports and training modalities.

Anyone with darker skin tone. Melanin reduces UVB absorption and significantly impairs endogenous vitamin D synthesis. People with darker skin require substantially more sun exposure to produce equivalent vitamin D to those with lighter skin. In the UK climate this is impossible to achieve through sun exposure alone.

Anyone who works indoors. Glass blocks UVB radiation. If your working environment is primarily indoors, your skin is receiving essentially zero UVB regardless of how bright it is outside. Indoor workers in the UK have chronically inadequate vitamin D synthesis potential.

Vegans and vegetarians. The richest dietary sources of vitamin D are animal products. Plant-based diets provide essentially no vitamin D unless fortified foods are consumed regularly. Lichen-derived D3 supplementation is the most direct solution.

Safe at 2,000 IU. Here is what you need to know.

Vitamin D toxicity is possible but requires sustained intake of very high doses over extended periods. The tolerable upper intake level established by the European Food Safety Authority is 4,000 IU per day for adults. The 2,000 IU dose in this formula is precisely half that upper limit and sits within the range most commonly used in the randomised controlled trials that demonstrate benefit without risk.

Vitamin D toxicity causes hypercalcaemia, elevated calcium in the blood, which can cause nausea, weakness, kidney damage and cardiovascular complications. This has been reported almost exclusively in cases of supplementation at 10,000 IU or more daily for extended periods, sometimes involving product labelling errors with doses several times higher than declared. At 2,000 IU, the safety margin is wide.

The combination of vitamin D3 with vitamin K2, which is also present in this formula, is clinically relevant for calcium metabolism. K2 directs calcium into bone and away from soft tissue, which partially addresses the theoretical concern about soft tissue calcification at higher vitamin D intake. The two nutrients work in concert, which is why both are included.

2,000 IU is half the established upper safe limit. The risk at this dose in healthy adults is theoretical. The benefit is documented.

What the Research Shows
Immunity

25 randomised controlled trials. Over 11,000 participants. One clear conclusion.

The 2017 BMJ meta-analysis by Martineau et al. found that daily or weekly Vitamin D supplementation significantly reduced acute respiratory tract infection risk across the pooled participant data. The protective effect was strongest in individuals who were deficient at baseline, the majority of UK residents in winter.

Testosterone

Twelve months of D3 supplementation produced a 25% increase in testosterone.

A randomised controlled trial in Hormone and Metabolic Research found mean total testosterone rose by approximately 25% in men supplementing with 3,332 IU of Vitamin D3 daily versus placebo over 12 months. This compounds with the zinc-testosterone relationship addressed elsewhere in this formula.

Muscle

D3 reduces fall risk in older adults by more than 20%.

A JAMA meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials found that supplemental Vitamin D reduced falls in older individuals by over 20% versus calcium supplementation or placebo. The mechanism is direct. Vitamin D receptors in skeletal muscle tissue influence muscle fibre development, contraction speed and force production.

Form

D3 is 87% more potent than D2 at raising serum Vitamin D levels.

A meta-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found D3 significantly outperformed D2 in raising and sustaining blood 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations. Most vegan Vitamin D supplements use D2. The Daily Foundation uses D3 from lichen because vegan credentials and biological effectiveness are not a trade-off worth making.

UK context

Between October and April the UK sun cannot trigger D3 synthesis. For anyone.

The angle of the sun relative to the earth's surface between October and April means UVB radiation does not reach ground level in the UK at sufficient intensity to trigger meaningful Vitamin D production regardless of how much time you spend outdoors. This is not an overcast day problem. It is a geometry problem. Five to six months every year your body's primary D3 production mechanism is effectively switched off. Factor in office-based work, indoor training and sunscreen use during warmer months and year-round supplementation is not excessive caution. It is the rational response to the environment most UK residents actually live in.
